THE WILLIAM RAND (1706-1771) AND SOPHIA ALMAND FAMILY,
RANGING FROM ISLE OF WIGHT COUNTY, VA TO COLBERT COUNTY, ALABAMA
TO CASS AND MARION COUNTIES, TEXAS

This database, compiled by Martha Rand Hix, is the result of thirty years of searching cemeteries, courthouses, libraries, reeling microfilm, calling on family and strangers, begging and borrowing photographs, and eight years of addiction to computer research. To name all the PEOPLE who helped her would take a book, but she feels she must mention her husband Carl, as well as R.R. Laurenson, Pat Rand, Rubystein McGhee, Linnie Benefield, and Tigner Rand, along with the following, all now passed on: Margaret Shanks, Hank Rand, and Adele Moore Mullen. Note must be given to Oscar Ripley Rand, the first of the name, who started a trend in 1895, when he wrote to William Rand Kenan, giving information on the family. Oscar's namesake nephew, Oscar Ripley Rand III, 1886-1981, wrote a detailed and meticulous history of William & Sophia Almand Rand's descendants, NORTH CAROLINA RANDS, A STUDY IN ANCESTRY.

Also invaluable are her pals in the E-Agathas' sleuth group. Martha's database contains much original material, and some very interesting stories. It concentrates on her line of descent. Contact Martha through our CONTACT button above.

FROM THE PERSPECTIVE OF WAKE COUNTY, NORTH CAROLINA

This Wiliam Rand database is maintained by Pat Rand, your Webmaster and a Rand by marriage. It is based on the work of a number of other family members, namely Martha Hix, Margaret Shanks, Henry Ashley Rand, and R.R. Laurenson. Information was also obtained from a manuscript written by Oscar Ripley Rand. The information has been updated to include census information obtained online, and other vital statistics information. Because Pat’s husband George is from a different line than Martha's, there is more and expanded information on his line of descent, which pretty much stayed in Virginia and North Carolina.
