MARGARET RAND SHANKS' PHOTO ARCHIVES
An Album of Old Family Photos

Many of Margaret's photographs are of the KING family, cousins to the Rands.

The mother of Hal Rand of Texas was Martha "Patsey" Curtis, daughter of John Curtis, Esq., and his second wife, Mary Shaw. Patsey's sister, Burchet, married Harwell Richard King. As the Rands like to marry cousins, there was a lot of that going on, so the Kings are at least cousins, if not double cousins to our branch of the Rand family. Both the Kings and the Rands were prominent in what is now Colbert County, Alabama.

MARGARET'S FAMILIES...

1. THE KING FAMILY (immediately below)

2. THE PORTER FAMILY

3. THE RAND FAMILY

CURT KING, JR.
King, Curt with his friend,
Curtis Johnson

Burchett CURTis King, Jr., was Margaret's great-uncle

CURT KING, SR.
King, Curtis

The senior version, father of Curt to the left.
This Curt King was Margaret's great-grandfather. He was also
a first cousin, once removed to Hal Rand of Texas.

King, Emma - Mrs Charles Puller
Emma was the daughter of Curt King, Sr., & his wife,
Mary McWilliams "Mackey" Warren.
This makes her sister to "Miss Pattie" King Rand. ("Get the kids and dogs off the streets of Leighton. Miss Pattie's driving to town!")

King, Hartwell Richard

This is the husband of Burchet Curtis.
He died in his 50s. Legend has it that Hartwell died on a business trip to Wake County, NC, and that his body was preserved in a barrel of whiskey, for the trip home to his widow, but my good pal E-Spy says it was more likely Hartwell's father, Richard, who had the pickling.

Here's a link to a page with more pictures of Hartwell and of his wife, our Aunt Burchet...

King, Hugh M.

This is Curt & Mackey's son, brother to the abovementioned Emma, and to Miss Pattie and Lois & Inez, mentioned below.

King, Hugh M.jpg

Ooops! Got a duplicate here. My apologies. It's too much trouble to remove him, believe me...

King, Inez

See above

King, Lois Louise

At one point, I thought Lois was a married lady, but I've rethought that

King, Martha Oswald
This is "Miss Pattie,"
Mrs. Henry Ashley Rand
If I could meet any one person from history, it
would be Miss Pattie. She's always fascinated me.

King, Mary McWilliams "Mackey" Warren

Wife of Curt King, Sr., and mother to Miss Pattie King Rand, Mackey was Margaret's great-grandmother. Mackey's sister, Martha Ann "Puss" Warren, married Professor Robert Bruce King, Curt King's brother. Sisters married brothers.

King, Mrs. Burchet Curtis

Aunt Burchet as a very old lady. From this photo, I wonder if she'd had a stroke.

King, Nancy Emily

1860-1931
Nannie was the daughter of
Prof. Robert Bruce King & Martha Ann "Puss" Warren. Mackie Warren King, above, was her aunt X two.

King, Oswald in 1881

The son of Burchet Curtis & Hartwell King, Oswald married Martha Rebecca Delony, d/o Dr. Edward Broadnax Deloney & Margaret Fox. Oswald outlived his wife by 31 year.

Prof. Robert Bruce King (1831-1905)
& wife,
Martha Ann "Puss" Warren (1839-1900)

Abovementioned.
Robert and Puss were the parents of eight children, Katie, Mattie, Percy, Nannie, Bruce, Mary, Margaret, and Rush.

To the left is a collage from Margaret's old album.

Top left is "Mr. Thomas Jones." Was he the Dr. Tom N. Jones who married Inez King?

Top right, Oswald King. Given his youthful appearance, he is doubtfully the original Oswald King. Most likely, this Oswald was the originals' nephew, Oswald King the son of Paul H. King & his wife, Mary Ann Cummins.

Bottom left, "Mr. William King." Perhaps the one who lived 1852-1924 and was the son of Hartwell Richard King, Jr., and his wife, Mary Henderson Smith (the d/o John Smith & Susan Rogers.)

Bottom right, ANN LaFAYETTE KING, Mrs. Edward Goodwin, abovementioned

Dr. Edgar Rand & his wife, Jessie Hester Rand.

Here's how Ada Mai was related to Cousin Hudson's Rand grandmother.

Rand, John BOOSE, 1867-1896

Boose Rand was the son of Capt. PNG Rand (brother to Hal Rand of Texas) and Martha Ann Smith, d/o John Smith & Susan Rogers.

Rand, Hank in 1975
(Henry Ashley Rand, III, 1927-2005)

Hank's namesake uncle

Rand, Joseph Oscar

Son of Dr. Edgar Rand & Jessie Hester Rand; brother to Ada Mai & Freddie, abovementioned.

Rand, Minnie & Joe, siblings

Minnie Johnson Rand, aka Minnie Rand Dillard, took Margaret under her wing and showed the young girl from Tuscumbia how the other half lived. Minnie befriended many in the family, and even opened her Huntsville home for family weddings.

Minnie was sibling to Fred, Ada Mai, and Joe.

Rand, Dr. John Walter
1820-1890

s/o John Rand & Martha "Patsey" Curtis, Dr. John Rand was, like PNG & Jack, a brother to HAL RAND of TEXAS.

Dr. John Rand married Catherine "Kate" Pearsall, and they were the parents of nine children.

They lived at Violet Hall, near Helen Keller's Tuscumbia home, Ivy Green. It was either Dr. John or his son, Dr. Edward Pearsall Rand, who delivered Helen Keller.

Rand, Joseph Oscar

Abovementioned brother to Ada Mai, Fred, and Minnie.

Joe, who was Director of the International Shoe Company in St. Louis, married Helen Lainier Wynne, and they had three children.
